Manage the Managers

I have during several lectures brought forward that in India the basic styles of Management, are namely

  1. Punjabi Management
  2. Gupta Management
  3. Sindhi Management
  4. Marwari Management
  5. Parsi Management

Each having their positive and negative aspects

Recently I had a chance to be part of a study in which we found another style which is unique in many ways.

The company is over 200+ Cr, and have a good reputation in their line of business.

The policy on Managing the Mangers is very simple and inspired by "Sun Tzu" author of "The Art of War".

It is said that once Sun Tzu was tested for his skills of managing soldiers by King of Wu.
Under this test the King wanted "Sun Tzu" to train the women of the palace to military drill.

So arrangements were made to bring about 200 women from the palace, and the King's concubines as the head. "Sun Tsu" instructed the ladies if they understood simple instructions of eyes Right, left and front, about turn, left and right turn. The Word of Command having thus explained, he started the drums and asked for a right turn. But as it was expected the ladies only laughed and giggled. On this "Sun Tsu" just asked if the orders were heard clearly and distinct or not, on hearing it in the affirmative, he inquired if the orders were not thoroughly understood, it was the general who were to be blamed.

Having informed all once again he started the drill and instructed right turn again. Hearing the command the women just laughed and giggled again. This time he concluded to all that if the orders are clear and distinct and understood by all, and still there is some confusion it is the officers who are to be blamed.

Having said and explained he ordered the officers of the group to killed/executed. This sent all to take the command seriously and the women of palace started to perform on the Military Drill.

This organization has taken this policy to another level.

They fire the senior managers after two to three months, for failing to deliver. If you ask them what was the task they had to deliver then they are silent, as they had not briefed them about it.

The most interesting part is that the organization has grown over time, maybe the rate of growth has not been good but it is growing.

Now the question is that, how has this growth come about even when they have been firing their heads so consistently.

Human's are a Commodity

.

The Human today are classified in many ways and in today's economy it has been referred to as a resource and several times as a commodity. Even the Department in the organization is referred to as HR or Human Resource, nothing personnel about it. The employees are treated as a commodity which can be bought and thrown out at will. Under this head would like to bring in the new approach to the whole concept.

Lets see how this works out.
